For the BCO NextGen Workplace Competition 2017 we were asked to consider the following: The office of 2035: what will it look like and how will it support the way we will work?

The competition looked for a multi-disciplinary teams to provide considered, forward thinking, and innovative ideas that challenge the status quo of today’s workplaces; and that reflect on the future of our organisations, people, and physical environments.

Working with Helical PLC and Ashby Capital we arrived at the following scenario for the entry to be based around:

‘Since 1995, the Secret Intelligence Service has occupied its iconic building next to Vauxhall Bridge.

The year is 2035 and following a catastrophic ‘workplace accident’, which left just the concrete frame standing, MI6 requires the construction of a replacement headquarters building on the same site.

The building needs to run ’24 hours a day’ , an engine for information processing and exchange. It needs to respond to the necessary security requirements but be more flexible and collaborative than any other government property of the past.

The brief from MI6 is to create a building which is durable and fit for purpose, now and for the future.

The Government is striving to attract the best talent, they are competing head to head with the private sector and they need their building to reflect this.’
